Резкая критика сословного строя и его идеологии со стороны еретиков потребовала нового идеологического обоснования феодализма. Эту задачу стремился осуществить крупнейший идеолог католицизма доминиканский монах Фома Аквинский.</p>
<p>Идеологи католицизма ставили Фоме Аквинскому в заслугу обращение к науке и философии, широкую эрудицию, обширную логическую аргументацию, интерес к наследию античной культуры. Однако от соединения науки с религией выигрывала только последняя.</p>
<p>Политико-правовая концепция Фомы Аквинского была основательной апологией западноевропейского феодализма. Не только оправдание казней и гонений еретиков, но и принципиальное обоснование церковного контроля за развитием науки и философии, подчинение последней мертвящим догмам католицизма, возведение господства и подчинения в одну из основ мироздания, прославление подсказанной феодальным строем иерархии как универсального принципа строения общества и природы, обширное обоснование феодального права как божественного установления, исчерпывающая аргументация "рабства" (т.е. крепостничества), концепция государства, вмещающая теократические устремления католической церкви, — все это предопределило господство учения Фомы Аквинского в католической феодальной идеологии, вплоть до провозглашения его "святым", "ангелическим доктором".
